Mohammad Asif Betageri (28), a resident of Sirsi in Uttara Kannada district, was arrested by Udupi city police in connection with a series of house burglaries that occurred in Kodankur New Colony, Puttur village, about a month ago.

On the night of July 5, three houses in Kodankur New Colony were reportedly burglarized. Following a complaint, the Udupi town police registered a case and launched an investigation.

During interrogation, Asif confessed to committing the thefts along with accomplices. He revealed they had arrived in a vehicle, broke into the homes around midnight, and stole gold ornaments and cash. The stolen items were sold in Bhatkal and Sirsi for financial gain.

Police recovered gold ornaments weighing approximately 95.5 grams and 255 grams of silver valued at around Rs 8.5 lakh, traced back to the stolen goods sold in Bhatkal and Sirsi.

Further, Asif admitted to committing similar burglaries in the jurisdictions of Sagar town and Nyamathi police stations. He also implicated his brother Arif, Anees, and relatives Saleem and Shoaib, who are involved in multiple thefts and other criminal activities across Goa and Uttar Pradesh.

Udupi SP Hariram Shankar confirmed that while Asif is in custody, his brother Arif and other accomplices remain absconding. Police teams are actively pursuing leads to apprehend them.
