Police arrested two interstate drug smugglers, Ranjodh Singh (27) of Madar village, Khadoor Sahib, Tarn Taran, and Jasbir Singh (35) of Madi village, Bhikhiwind, Tarn Taran, recovering 14.37 kg of opium during a raid near Gholumajra bus stop on Chandigarh-Ambala highway.
The accused were intercepted while transporting the narcotics from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, to Tarn Taran via Mohali. Acting on a tip-off, Lalru police set up a blockade and stopped a Toyota Innova bearing an Uttarakhand registration.
Police recovered two wax-sealed packets from a bag inside the vehicle, containing 7.545 kg and 6.825 kg of opium respectively. Rs 5,000 cash suspected to be drug money was also seized.
Both accused have prior criminal records linked to drug offenses: Ranjodh Singh was booked under the NDPS Act in 2021 for heroin possession, while Jasbir Singh was arrested in 2019 for opium possession.
Police say this was their third smuggling trip on this route. Investigations continue into their supply chain and broader interstate narcotics operations.
Both were produced before the local court and sent to police custody for two days.
