In a major crackdown on illegal drug activity, Tripura Police seized over Rs1 crore worth of cannabis in two separate operations in Sepahijala district early Tuesday. One suspect, Indra Kumar Debbarma, was arrested, and a large quantity of ganja was recovered from a forested area.
According to Tapas Das, Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura Police Station, the first operation resulted in the arrest of Indra Debbarma, from whom police recovered cannabis valued at Rs28 lakh.
In a second, unconnected operation conducted just hours later in the dense forest of Dhanirampur, police discovered 386 kg of dry cannabis packed inside nine plastic drums. The forest stash was abandoned and unclaimed at the time of the raid.
The estimated market value of the forest seizure is Rs77.2 lakh, bringing the total haul to over Rs1 crore. Investigators believe the forest consignment was part of a larger trafficking operation and was likely being stored for smuggling purposes.
A case has been registered under the NDPS Act, and a probe is ongoing to trace the trafficking network behind the illegal cannabis trade.
