Warsaw, Poland — Indian activist Sanal Edamaruku has been arrested in Poland on an Interpol notice issued by Indian authorities. Edamaruku, a well-known figure in India for his rationalist views, was detained at Warsaw Modlin Airport on March 28 while traveling to attend a human rights conference.
Edamaruku, who has been living in Finland since 2012 after self-imposing exile, faces blasphemy charges in India, which led to the Indian government issuing an Interpol red notice for his arrest. The charges stem from his criticisms of religious practices, particularly his public debunking of so-called “miracles.”
Rationalist International, a foundation founded by Edamaruku, confirmed his arrest and expressed concern over the situation. The Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs also acknowledged being informed about the arrest. Edamaruku’s legal team is expected to contest the extradition request.
Edamaruku’s case has sparked debate around freedom of expression and the treatment of activists who challenge religious dogma in India.
