Mau police on Tuesday arrested two drug smugglers, including a woman, and seized 18.490 kg of charas valued at approximately Rs 9 crore. Police said the contraband had been procured from Nepal and was being transported to western Uttar Pradesh.
Superintendent of Police Elamaran G said the arrests were made following a tip-off regarding the movement of drug peddlers. Acting on the information, Kotwali police conducted a raid in the Ramleela Maidan area.
A joint team comprising personnel from the Special Operations Group (SOG), Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit and Kotwali police station carried out the operation and apprehended the two accused on the spot.
The arrested individuals were identified as Imam Ali, a resident of Moradabad, and Najma, a resident of West Bengal. Police said both were working as carriers and were attempting to transport the charas consignment to Moradabad and a district in Uttarakhand.
During interrogation, the accused disclosed that the charas had been sourced from Nepal. The contraband, packed in 16 polybags, weighed a total of 18.490 kg.
The SP said further investigation is underway to trace and dismantle the entire drug-smuggling network linked to the arrested duo.
