The South West Garo Hills District Executive Force (SWGH DEF) has made a major breakthrough in a string of theft cases affecting both government and private properties across the region.
According to Superintendent of Police Vikash Varma, the success followed a joint interstate operation conducted in the Mankachar area on August 29, in coordination with Assam Police.
During the raid, police apprehended 43-year-old Iftakul Islam, a resident of Thakuranbari located on the Assam-Meghalaya border. A search of his premises led to the recovery of various stolen items, including batteries, copper wires, an abrasive cutting machine, and other materials believed to be linked to several theft cases registered at Ampati Police Station.
A pickup vehicle allegedly used to transport the stolen items was also seized.
Preliminary investigations suggest Islam is part of an organized gang targeting government installations and private properties in both Garo Hills and parts of Mankachar, Assam.
Further action by the DEF led to the arrest of two more suspects—Amirul Islam (23) and Shahidul Islam (26)—on September 1, 2025. Both are also residents of Thakuranbari.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to recover more stolen property and apprehend the remaining members of the gang.
The district police reiterated their strong commitment to fighting organized crime and urged community members to support law enforcement efforts in maintaining public safety.
