Panaji police have detained Mirza Sheraz Alibaigh, an orthopaedic surgeon from Hyderabad, Telangana, for allegedly deceiving a jeweller in Goa by presenting a fake payment screenshot. The scam involved acquiring gold ornaments valued at Rs 1.41 lakh without actual payment.

According to Rahul Gupta, Superintendent of Police (North), jeweller Tejas Salkar, owner of Aurum Jewels in Panaji Market, reported the incident. On August 11, Alibaigh purchased several gold items including a gold chain (2.75 g), a short mangalsutra (7.7 g), a Ganesh locket (0.85 g), earrings (1.48 g), and another locket (1.87 g).

Alibaigh claimed to have transferred Rs 1,41,157 via RTGS and showed a fake screenshot as proof. However, the jeweller’s account reflected no such transaction, prompting police investigation.

The surgeon was arrested on Tuesday, with all the gold items recovered. Preliminary inquiry suggests Alibaigh may be involved in seven similar fraud cases across multiple states.
