HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A woman from Huntsville has been arrested after injuring two police officers during an attempted traffic stop. Authorities say Kiara Shardae Burnett, 29, attempted to flee the scene after officers initiated a stop on March 30, just past midnight, on Pulaski Pike and Poplar Avenue.
According to the Huntsville Police Department, Burnett, who had an active warrant against her, tried to drive away but collided with a tow truck. As she reversed her vehicle, she struck the two officers before hitting their patrol car.
The incident quickly escalated into a high-speed chase as Burnett fled the scene. The pursuit ended when Burnett crashed her vehicle into an unoccupied car at the intersection of Jordan Lane and Mastin Lake Road.
Burnett was accompanied by two passengers, including her child. Fortunately, they were not injured and were able to exit the vehicle before Burnett sped off.
Both officers sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. A spokesperson from the Huntsville Police Department confirmed that they are expected to make a full recovery.
Burnett was arrested and is facing numerous charges, including:
Two counts of first-degree assault
Leaving the scene of an accident causing injury or death
Felony attempt to elude a police officer
Third-degree domestic violence
Reckless endangerment
Second-degree possession of marijuana
Two counts of probation violation
She is currently being held on a $117,000 bond at the Madison County Jail.
This incident highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face while on duty, as well as the consequences of attempting to evade arrest.
