HOLLISTER, CA — Hollister Police arrested Jose Cervantes, 30, of San Jose, and Mayra Aguirre, 30, of Gilroy, after a traffic enforcement camera system alerted officers to a wanted Dodge Durango SUV traveling through the city on May 28.
The city’s Flock Safety camera system detected the vehicle, which was linked to previous felony violations. When a patrol officer attempted to stop the SUV on Westside Boulevard, the driver fled, running stop signs and crashing into two other vehicles near Locast Avenue and Fourth Street.
After the collision, Cervantes and Aguirre fled on foot. Cervantes was caught by police after a foot chase, while Aguirre was later found hiding in a backyard on Fourth Street.
During the investigation, officers discovered the vehicle was involved in an earlier police pursuit in Gilroy that week. Inside the Dodge, nearly 100 pieces of stolen mail, personal documents, credit cards, Social Security cards, and checks were recovered—bearing addresses from across Santa Clara County. Narcotics were also found.
Authorities suspect the pair was part of a mail and identity theft ring. Cervantes is a parolee recently released under the Post Release Community Supervision program.
The occupants of the two struck vehicles sustained minor injuries and were treated on scene. Cervantes and Aguirre were taken to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital for medical evaluation before being booked at San Benito County Jail.
They face multiple charges, including evading police with wanton disregard, hit-and-run collision, drug offenses, DUI, and possession of stolen property.
