Tokyo, Japan – Popular Japanese actor Hiroya Shimizu, 26, has been arrested on suspicion of violating Japan’s drug laws after police reportedly discovered cannabis and rolling papers in his home.
According to Tokyo Metropolitan Police, a search was conducted around 4:30 a.m. on September 3 at Shimizu’s residence in Suginami Ward. He was taken into custody approximately two hours later, following the discovery of the illegal substances.
A woman who was reportedly living with Shimizu was also arrested, and both individuals are said to have admitted to the charges.
Japanese media outlet Livedoor News reported that police began investigating Shimizu earlier this year after receiving a tip-off in January about his suspected marijuana use. Authorities have not disclosed the source of the information.
Shimizu’s talent agency, Sa-ku, released a statement expressing shock at the news:
“We were informed through media reports and are currently trying to verify the facts. We are deeply perplexed by the situation.”
The agency added that it is consulting legal representatives and will issue further updates once more information is confirmed.
Hiroya Shimizu has appeared in several well-known films and TV series, including Chihayafuru (2016–2018), Tokyo Revengers (2021–2023), and Eye Love You (2024). He is currently appearing in The 19th Medical Chart, which stars Arashi’s Jun Matsumoto.
It remains unclear how this arrest will affect Shimizu’s ongoing projects or career moving forward.
