Meghalaya police have taken Himan Gogoi, a 24-year-old resident of Jorhat, Assam, into custody for allegedly harassing schoolgirls in Shillong. The suspect fled to his village after the incidents but was tracked down by the authorities.
Investigations began after a video surfaced on May 24 showing a masked man inappropriately touching a schoolgirl near YWCA in Umsohsun. The footage showed the man lifting the victim’s uniform and taking photographs using his mobile phone.
A special police team, led by additional SP (Operations) Ivan B Diengdoh, was formed on May 26 to locate the accused. The harassment reportedly took place on May 23 at around 6:35 AM. Following the victim’s examination, an FIR was registered at Lumdiengjri Police Station under Case No. 55(05)2025, invoking Sections 76 and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 11 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
SP Vivek Syiem also mentioned a similar harassment case that occurred on May 19 near Dreamland in Police Bazar, between 7:15 and 7:30 AM, involving another schoolgirl.
Police continue to investigate further to ensure justice and the safety of minors in the region.
