HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – An 18-year-old man is facing capital murder charges after a fatal shooting that followed a carjacking in west Houston, authorities say.

Henry Steven Aguilar, 18, has been charged with capital murder and evading arrest in connection to the Sept. 21 shooting death of 25-year-old Felix Caxaj, a young father.

According to the Houston Police Department, the incident began around 11:05 p.m. in the 6300 block of Skyline Drive, where a man reported being carjacked at gunpoint by three Hispanic males—one armed with a rifle. Two suspects fled in the victim’s car, while Aguilar reportedly drove away in a black sedan.

Shortly after, officers were flagged down and discovered a man—later identified as Felix Caxaj—lying on a sidewalk nearby. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Aguilar attempted to rob Caxaj after the initial carjacking and shot him when he resisted.

The investigation led police to the black vehicle used by Aguilar, and he was arrested the next day following a brief pursuit. Authorities have also arrested two additional suspects: Jhalmar Ariel Aguilar-Soriano, 18, and an unnamed 16-year-old, both charged with aggravated robbery and theft.

Prosecutors believe the trio may be responsible for other violent crimes in the area around Sept. 21, using a black Infiniti G35 sedan and a short-barreled rifle with a white tip.

Adding to the controversy, Aguilar had previously been convicted of deadly conduct for an unrelated shooting in April. In July 2025, he was sentenced to one year in county jail, but was released after serving only 119 days, due to a “3-for-1” credit policy at the Harris County Jail.

“He should have served 365 days, but ended up walking out after just under four months,” explained defense attorney Joe Vinas.

Currently, Aguilar is held in Harris County Jail on $1 million bond for the capital murder charge.

The District Attorney’s Office and HPD continue to investigate whether the suspects are linked to other recent crimes.
