MARLBORO COUNTY, S.C. — Hendrick Simmons has been arrested in connection with the death of Larry “Moe” Malachi, according to Marlboro County Chief Deputy Larry Turner.
Deputies responded Tuesday to a home on Gordon Street in Bennettsville for a death investigation. Authorities determined that a verbal dispute between Simmons and the victim escalated into a physical altercation. Turner said Simmons struck Malachi with an object, causing his death.
Neighbors reported seeing more than eight police vehicles and EMS at the scene. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s (SLED) crime scene unit assisted in the investigation, and the Bennettsville Police Department helped secure the area.
Simmons was taken into custody without incident and is being held at the Marlboro County Detention Center pending a bond hearing before a circuit court judge.
