by Ananya Mehta

Hemgir police in Sundargarh district have arrested four individuals in connection with the murder of 35-year-old Satyakam Kua, a mentally unstable man whose decomposed body was found near a cremation ground on February 7.

The arrested accused are:

Bibek Luhura (20) of Lefripara

Sunil Kalo (25)

Saroj Rout (27)

Jasketan Luhura (20)

Police said the four men allegedly killed Satyakam over a missing motorcycle. The victim had gone missing on February 3 and was discovered dead four days later near the cremation ground of New Balinga village in Hemgir.

According to Sundargarh SDPO Nirmal Mohapatra, Satyakam, who was mentally unsound and often wandered in the area, was suspected by Sunil to have hidden his missing motorcycle near a coal mine. Sunil confronted Satyakam at the New Balinga village market and assaulted him. He, along with the other three accused, then took Satyakam to a secluded spot and severely beat him. After the victim became unresponsive, the accused fled, leaving the crime unnoticed for several days due to the isolated location.

Following complaints from the deceased’s family and based on circumstantial evidence, police questioned the four suspects. During interrogation, they confessed to the murder. They have been arrested and produced in court.
