SAN MARCOS, Texas — A Hays County corrections officer has been arrested after allegations surfaced involving sexual misconduct with an inmate. John Duran, a corrections officer with the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, was taken into custody on Thursday following an internal report from an inmate.
On April 4, the inmate reported the misconduct to a corrections supervisor. An internal investigation was immediately launched, and Duran was removed from all contact with female inmates, including the alleged victim. Upon further investigation, it was determined that his actions, if proven, could constitute a criminal offense.
As a result, the Hays County Criminal Investigation Division took over the case, pausing the internal investigation to focus on criminal proceedings. Following consultations with the Hays County District Attorney’s Office, arrest warrants were issued for Duran on charges of official oppression, a Class A misdemeanor, and tampering with a governmental record, a state jail felony.
Duran was arrested by the Hays County Sheriff’s Office and processed into the Hays County Jail. He has been placed on administrative leave while the internal investigation continues. Duran, who has been with the sheriff’s office since July 2022, has no previous internal investigations.
Sheriff Anthony Hipolito emphasized the agency’s commitment to high standards of conduct, stating, “We hold our personnel to the highest standards, and any violation of that duty will be met with swift accountability to ensure the safety and dignity of those in our care. While I take pride in the work the men and women of the Hays County Sheriff’s Office do every day, the actions of this corrections officer betray the trust placed in him by the public, those he works with, and undermine the integrity of our agency.”
