Hassan Jhangur Found Guilty of Murder in Sheffield Wedding Attack

Man jailed after killing passer-by and injuring others at wedding

A man who deliberately drove his car into a crowd during his sister’s wedding reception in Sheffield has been found guilty of murder.

Hassan Jhangur, 25, was convicted by a majority verdict for the killing of 46-year-old Chris Marriott in Burngreave in December 2023. Mr Marriott, a passer-by and “Good Samaritan,” had stopped to help after an earlier fight left Jhangur’s sister injured. He died at the scene, while four others were seriously hurt.

Jhangur, from Whiteways Road, Sheffield, was found guilty of murder, three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and one count of wounding with intent. He was acquitted of attempted murder but convicted of a second wounding with intent charge after launching a brutal knife attack on his new brother-in-law, Hasan Khan.

During sentencing, Mr Justice Morris announced that Jhangur would receive a life sentence, with the minimum term to be set at a later hearing.

Jhangur’s father, Mohammed, 57, was convicted of perverting the course of justice after hiding the knife used in the attack. He was released on bail pending sentencing.

The trial at Sheffield Crown Court revealed a violent family feud between the Jhangurs and Khans. On December 27, after the wedding of Amaani Jhangur and Hasan Khan, tensions erupted outside the Khan family home. A fight broke out, and Jhangur’s sister Nafeesa was knocked unconscious.

Chris Marriott and off-duty midwife Alison Norris intervened to help. Witnesses then saw Hassan Jhangur speed into the street in a Seat Ibiza, hitting Riasat Khan before plowing into the crowd around Nafeesa.

Following the crash, Jhangur stabbed Hasan Khan repeatedly. He then handed the knife to his father, who hid it in the boot of his taxi.

The attack left Mr Marriott dead and several others severely injured, marking a tragic end to what was meant to be a day of celebration.
