In a significant drug bust, police in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills arrested 28-year-old Harun Ali from Assam after recovering over 373 kilograms of cannabis from his vehicle. The arrest happened during a routine checkpoint on National Highway-6 — a notorious smuggling route in Northeast India.
The seizure occurred at around 2 am near Khliehriat, following a tip-off that prompted the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) and local police to set up a roadblock. Harun Ali, driving a Mahindra pickup truck coming from the Tripura border towards Assam, tried to evade the checkpoint but was stopped swiftly.
A thorough inspection revealed 37 large plastic packets containing cannabis, concealed under tarpaulin sheets and sacks of vegetables. The total weight of the contraband was 373.52 kg, marking one of the largest cannabis busts in the region in recent weeks.
Harun Ali, hailing from the Kaliganj area of Karimganj district in Assam, claimed ignorance about the contents during initial questioning. However, police suspect he is involved with a larger smuggling network.
Authorities have registered a case against him under multiple sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused is currently in custody and will be presented before the court soon.
