KELANTAN, Malaysia — A construction worker, Hamizi Hamzah, 45, was charged Thursday in the Magistrates’ Court with the murder of his wife’s cousin, Mohd Shuhairi Hasim, 46, in a gruesome attack that left the victim’s right leg and left arm severed.

Hamizi appeared before Magistrate Wan Ashrul Afham Mohamad Azmi, and no plea was recorded. The alleged murder occurred at Kampung Kok Bedullah at around 11:20 p.m. last Friday.

The charge, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries either the death penalty or up to 40 years of imprisonment, along with 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nazuha Ismail prosecuted the case, while Hamizi was unrepresented. The court scheduled the next mention for January 28, 2026.

In a separate case, Hamizi also faced charges for consuming methamphetamine at the Kelantan Narcotics Crime Investigation Department last Saturday. Under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, the offence carries a fine of up to RM5,000, or up to two years in prison, or both. Hamizi pleaded guilty to the drug charge, with pathology and chemical reports set for submission on the same date.

Police investigations revealed that Mohd Shuhairi, a single father and bulldozer driver, died after being repeatedly slashed with a machete, including injuries to his head. Preliminary findings suggest the attack stemmed from a longstanding dispute over inherited land, as well as anger over an indecently edited video involving Hamizi’s child that had circulated online.
