The Guwahati Police have arrested five individuals involved in a statewide vehicle theft operation. The arrests were made by the Crime Branch after receiving specific intelligence inputs about the gang’s activities.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Raju Das from Nalbari, Montu Barman from Nalbari, Junmoni Deka from Baksa, Raju Deka from Barpeta, and Jayanta Haloi from Noonmati, Guwahati. These suspects are believed to have been part of an active vehicle theft network operating not only in Assam but also potentially in other parts of the Northeast. The gang primarily targeted parked vehicles in public areas where the owners were not around, making it easier for them to steal.
Further investigations are underway to determine whether the gang had cross-border connections and to uncover the full extent of their operation. This arrest follows the discovery of a similar vehicle theft racket in the previous month, which involved stolen luxury vehicles from Assam being sold in Manipur.
The Dispur Police had uncovered this racket, which was being led by Rustam Ali, Inamul Ali, and Ali Akbar from Assam. The stolen vehicles, including Boleros, were sold at a fraction of their market value to three youths from Manipur. This discovery pointed to a wider vehicle theft and sale operation between Assam and Manipur, and police efforts led to the arrest of several individuals, disrupting the racket.
The authorities continue to investigate and unravel the larger network behind these theft operations.
