FARGO, N.D. — Nearly a year after a brief manhunt following a downtown shooting, Gregory Lacroix, 38, pleaded guilty to attempted murder in Cass County court on October 13.

Lacroix was charged after shooting Shane Curtis in the chest near the intersection of Third Avenue North and Broadway on October 17, 2024, close to the RDO Tower. Prosecutors dropped an aggravated assault charge as part of the plea deal.

Curtis was found on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. A witness reported Curtis was talking to someone inside a white Dodge disability van just before shots were fired, after which the van fled the scene. Security footage confirmed this account.

Police traced the van to a Moorhead owner who said Lacroix had taken it without permission. Hours later, police spotted the van and attempted to stop it, but Lacroix fled at speeds over 100 mph before the vehicle was abandoned in a parking lot.

A woman, Erin Sundby, who lived in the apartment near where the van was found, told investigators she was in a “tumultuous dating relationship” with Lacroix and that he had been suffering from psychosis. Sundby was charged with tampering for allegedly trying to hide the van keys and transporting Lacroix after the shooting.

Lacroix was arrested later that day. Initially denying involvement, he admitted to driving the van but claimed the bullets were blanks and denied shooting Curtis.

After his guilty plea, Judge Tristan Van de Streek revoked Lacroix’s bail and scheduled sentencing for December 22. Lacroix faces between 4 and 20 years in prison.
