Two women from Greenville County, South Carolina, linked to an animal recovery group, have been charged in connection with the theft and euthanization of a dog, according to arrest warrants.
Anakin’s Trails Stray and Pet Recovery announced on Facebook that their director, Ashley Raymond, and team member Elizabeth Farmer Waldrop were arrested. The organization called the charges “ridiculous and unwarranted.”
The group previously shared that they tried to save a 13-year-old dog named Max, found tied behind a property. After a vet visit, Max was diagnosed with heart failure and heartworms and was subsequently euthanized.
Following a bond hearing, both women were released on bond Wednesday night.
WYFF News 4 confirmed through Greenville County Sheriff’s Office warrants that Raymond and Waldrop face charges including stealing or killing an identified dog, trespassing, criminal conspiracy, and malicious injury to animals.
Warrants state that on July 16, the women cut a rope used as a trolley system to restrain the dog, trespassed on the owner’s property to take Max, and euthanized him without the owner’s consent or knowledge.
Authorities confirmed the dog’s owner is not under investigation.
The story is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
