A man is dead after being shot multiple times in his Greene County home, and the alleged shooter has been arrested and charged with murder.
On the early morning of Friday, December 20, 2024, at approximately 12:10 a.m., Greene County Deputies and EMS responded to a shooting call at a residence on Royce Drive in the Jason area. Upon arrival, law enforcement found 62-year-old Melvin Hawkins with multiple gunshot wounds. Hawkins was transported to ECU Health, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to witness statements, an altercation occurred between Hawkins and 40-year-old Emmanuel Williams at the residence. Witnesses reported that Hawkins had asked Williams to leave, leading to the shooting. Williams then fled the scene.
Shortly after, Williams returned to the residence while deputies were still on the scene. He was found to have injuries, and was subsequently transported to UNC Wayne Memorial for treatment of lacerations.
Williams, who had an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on prior traffic violations, was taken into custody. He has been charged with an open count of murder and is being held at the Greene County Detention Center without bond.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have yet to release further details.
