GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a string of car break-ins at various trailheads around Grand Junction. Alejandro Fernando Ruz is accused of targeting vehicles at Kokopelli, Devil’s Canyon, and Coal Canyon trailheads between December 2024 and February 2025.

The investigation began after a woman reported that her car had been left unlocked after a hike at the Kokopelli trailhead on Dec. 7, 2024. When she returned to her car, she discovered that her cash and credit cards were missing. Following the theft, the victim received notifications of nearly $2,000 worth of unauthorized purchases made using her credit cards.

Authorities believe Ruz was responsible for breaking into five vehicles over the course of several months. In total, investigators discovered over $20,000 in stolen funds from these thefts. It was revealed that Ruz had been renting cars in Utah and using them to travel to Mesa County, where he would break into the vehicles before returning the rental and committing additional crimes.

Ruz was arrested on February 10th at the Salt Lake Airport by the Salt Lake City Police Department. He now faces 24 charges, including identity theft, unauthorized use of a financial transaction device, first-degree criminal trespass, criminal mischief, and theft.

Ruz’s Crime Spree
The pattern of crime involved Ruz stealing credit card information from the victims, which he then used to make purchases or attempt purchases. Authorities were able to trace the stolen credit cards and connect them to Ruz through his rented vehicles, linking him to the series of break-ins.

After his arrest, Ruz was transferred to face charges in Mesa County, where he will appear in court for the various counts related to the thefts.

Impact on the Community
This case highlights the growing problem of thefts in popular outdoor areas like trailheads. It serves as a reminder for individuals to ensure their vehicles are secure and not leave valuables in sight while enjoying outdoor activities.

Ruz’s arrest has provided some closure to the victims whose financial information was stolen. However, law enforcement officials continue to remind residents and visitors to remain vigilant to prevent future incidents.

Authorities are urging anyone with additional information regarding this case or similar incidents to come forward.
