The V.P. Marg Police have arrested 33-year-old gold artisan Bishu Ramkrishna Mangal from East Midnapore, West Bengal, for allegedly breaching trust and fleeing with gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs19.5 lakh.

The complainant, Anupam Tapankumar Pal (42), employed Mangal at his Mumbai jewellery shop. On June 1, between 7 pm and 8 pm, Pal entrusted him with 272 grams of 14-carat gold and diamond polki for polishing and setting. Instead, Mangal absconded with the valuable ornaments.

An FIR was registered under Section 316(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on Pal’s complaint. Police Sub-Inspector Watsar and his team tracked Mangal to Contai in East Midnapore after technical analysis.

Following a two-day operation, Mangal was arrested and recovered stolen property worth approximately Rs14 lakh, including 105 grams of gold ornaments, a 139-gram necklace, and 28 diamond/polki stones.

Mangal was remanded to police custody until July 17 and later sent to judicial custody. The investigation continues to recover the remaining jewellery and identify any accomplices.
