CLOVIS, N.M. (KFDA) — Giovanni Brown-Johnson, 18, has pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in the 2024 fatal shooting of 17-year-old Demetrious Anderson, Ninth Judicial District Attorney Quentin Ray announced on Tuesday.
The shooting occurred on August 27, 2024, at the Clovis Apartments, where Clovis police responded to reports of gunfire. Officers found Anderson on the pavement with gunshot wounds to the left arm and abdomen.
Officer Jesus Sarabia immediately applied a tourniquet and began CPR until EMS arrived. Anderson was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Investigators determined that both teens were armed—one with a 9mm handgun and the other with a .45-caliber pistol. Brown-Johnson was later identified as the shooter.
He was sentenced by District Court Judge David Reeb to 11 years in the New Mexico Department of Corrections, with no eligibility for parole until at least 10 years are served.
“These senseless acts of violence between teenagers have to stop,” DA Quentin Ray said. “One 17-year-old is dead, and an 18-year-old will now spend more than a decade behind bars. This tragedy affects not just the families involved but the entire community.”
The case was prosecuted by Special Prosecutor Brett Carter. Brown-Johnson was represented by Todd Holmes of the Law Office of the Public Defender.
