Ghaziabad police arrested Abhay Kumar, 20, along with his two accomplices, Aditya Rana and Kunal Panwar, for attacking a cab driver by slashing his throat and fleeing with his Maruti Wagon-R. The violent incident occurred on the night of August 7, with the motive reportedly linked to kidnapping Abhay’s former employer or stealing his luxury vehicles.
The victim, cab driver Mohammad Zakir, was overpowered after the trio booked a cab online. They tied him up and abandoned him near the banks of the Upper Ganga Canal near Niwari. Locals found Zakir the next morning and alerted the police. An FIR was registered under Section 309 (robbery) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a complaint by Zakir’s brother.
Abhay Kumar had a prior case related to the theft of his former employer’s Fortuner and Mercedes cars, filed on March 19 at Kavi Nagar police station. Abhay and an accomplice, Asif, were earlier arrested by North Delhi police, and the stolen cars were recovered. Abhay had been sent to jail but later secured bail.
According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abhay sought revenge for his arrest in the previous case. To execute this, he conspired with his accomplices to steal the Wagon-R and planned either to kidnap his former employer or steal the expensive vehicles for financial gain. The trio was apprehended while attempting to flee to Meerut.
Police recovered the stolen Wagon-R, two mobile phones, a country-made weapon, and three knives from the suspects. Additional charges under the Arms Act and other relevant sections are expected as investigations continue.
