PIKE COUNTY, Ala. — Two men have been arrested following a rural burglary that turned into a manhunt through the woods of Pike and Montgomery counties.

According to Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas, deputies responded to a suspicious person call around 12:34 a.m. on June 17 at a residence on Pike County Road 7714. Upon arrival, deputies encountered two suspects who immediately fled into nearby woods.

Despite tracking the suspects for two miles into Montgomery County, deputies lost contact with them. However, investigators pursued leads and eventually identified and arrested the suspects involved.

Garry Leonard Sanderson, 53, of Hope Hull, and Luverne Fleeton Jr., 46, of Letohatchee, have both been charged with:

First-degree theft of property

Third-degree burglary

Sheriff Thomas commended investigators Lt. Carlton Bean, Lt. Russ Thomas, and Sgt. Rhett Lolley for their dedication and hard work in bringing the suspects into custody.

“This case was solved due to relentless effort and teamwork,” Thomas said.

Both men remain in custody as the investigation continues.
