Kuala Lumpur: A gang of thieves managed to steal a gold bar ATM from a supermarket in Ampang Jaya, only to find that it had been emptied earlier.
The theft occurred on November 23, and the Ampang Jaya OCPD, Asst Comm Mohd Azam Ismail, reported that despite the theft of the machine, there were no gold bars inside, as they had been removed in advance. The estimated loss from the machine was about RM60,000.
Following the incident, a series of arrests took place between November 26 and 30. Three suspects, aged between 17 and 41, were detained in Ampang Jaya and Kajang. One of the suspects tested positive for drugs, and police discovered that one of them had a lengthy criminal history, including 54 prior offenses and three outstanding warrants.
Investigations revealed that the group specialized in targeting gold bar ATMs at supermarkets. They would then hire a lorry driver to transport the stolen machines. Two of the suspects have been granted police bail, while the third remains in custody, with a remand period scheduled until December 4.
