The police have arrested four men from Gujarat, including two auto-rickshaw drivers, for allegedly stealing Rs 11.25 lakh from the treasury of Dandekar College in Palghar city, Maharashtra. The theft took place between the evening of July 23 and the morning of July 24, when the cash collected as student fees was stolen from the college’s accounts department.
Following a police report from the college, investigators launched a probe. Using technical analysis and intelligence inputs, the authorities identified and apprehended the four suspects from Umbargaon in Gujarat’s Valsad district on Monday with local police assistance.
The accused—Shubham Virendra Singh (21), Murali Manohar Pawar (23), both auto-rickshaw drivers, Arun Lakhan Chavan (19), a mason, and Farooq Firoz Khan—confessed to the crime during interrogation. So far, Rs 4.05 lakh of the stolen amount has been recovered.
The four have been booked under sections 305(A) for theft in a dwelling house and 331(3)(4) for house trespass or house breaking under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
