In a shocking case of theft at the Bank of Baroda branch in Imphal, four bank staff, including the senior manager, have been arrested for their involvement in the disappearance of gold worth Rs4 crore. The arrests were made by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe the incident, which came to light on September 12.

The suspects have been identified as Ningombam Ganga, the senior manager, along with three other bank staff: Khaidem Jackiechan (38), Gary Moirangthem (21), and Akoijam Renash (20). The theft occurred at the Bank of Baroda branch located at Manipur University in Imphal.

The incident was first reported when the bank’s cashier arrived for duty on September 17 and found that the strongroom lock had been tampered with. Upon inspecting the strongroom, it was discovered that several packets of gold were missing.

CCTV footage from the bank revealed two individuals entering the branch manager’s chamber around 1:41 am on the night of the theft, just before the cameras mysteriously stopped recording.

Following the complaint filed by Ningombam Ganga on September 17, a thorough investigation was launched. The arrested suspects were produced before a magistrate on September 20 and were remanded in police custody for five days.

The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the details of the heist. The police suspect that the involvement of multiple bank staff raises questions about internal collusion, and they are exploring all angles of the case.

The SIT has assured the public that all efforts will be made to recover the stolen gold and bring the perpetrators to justice.
