Four individuals were arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of a young boy in Nischintapur, Nadia district, West Bengal, police confirmed. However, no arrests have yet been made concerning the mob lynching that led to the death of a couple accused of killing the child.
The situation in Nischintapur remains tense and fearful as the investigation continues. The arrested suspects — identified as Chotu Mondal, Kartik Mondal, Suchitra Mondal, and Supriya Bhowmik — are scheduled to be presented before the court soon. Police are actively searching for those responsible for the lynching and investigating if others were involved.
The tragedy unfolded after the body of Swarnabha Biswas, a Class 3 student, was found in a pond near his home on Saturday morning. The boy had gone missing the previous afternoon while playing nearby. Enraged villagers alleged that Utpal Biswas, 45, and his wife Soma Biswas, 38, were responsible for the child’s death. The couple was brutally beaten by locals and their home was set on fire in retaliation. Another individual was injured during the attack and has been hospitalized.
The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the state, raising concerns over a suspected child trafficking racket in the area and neighboring districts.
