In a significant crackdown on interstate drug trafficking, Chimpu Police have successfully seized 4.497 kg of cannabis (ganja) and arrested four individuals tied to a major drug network operating from Assam. The operation follows a prior successful dismantling of a heroin trafficking network, which resulted in the seizure of six heroin packets and the arrest of five individuals.
The operation unfolded on March 17, when Chimpu Police conducted a routine naka checking at the Chimpu check post. During the inspection, the police intercepted a motorcycle and discovered 1.440 kg of cannabis concealed under the seat. The motorcycle’s occupants, Lijom Dulom (20) from Sikarijo in Upper Subansiri district and Bhai Dobin alias Tumjum (19) from Airport Colony, also in the same district, were immediately taken into custody.
Upon interrogation, Dulom and Dobin confessed to sourcing the cannabis from Tokobari in Assam’s Biswanath district. This led the police to launch a follow-up operation targeting the broader supply network.
On March 20, police arrested two more suspects, Narayan Mahanand (25) and Sanjay Kumar (23), both residents of Boroi Bagan. In addition to the arrests, authorities recovered 3.057 kg of cannabis, two mobile phones, and a motorcycle.
A case has been registered at Chimpu Police Station under the NDPS Act, and investigations are ongoing to identify the main supplier behind the illegal drug trade. The police operation was led by Itanagar SDPO Kengo Dirchi, along with key officers such as Vibu Krishna and Vivek Maurya, under the supervision of SP Rohit Rajbir Singh. Singh also acknowledged the valuable support from local organizations like the Chimpu-Gohpur Market Committee and the Chimpu Youth Organization.
The police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking, emphasizing their commitment to creating a drug-free society through ongoing enforcement efforts.
