In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, four individuals, including a college student, were arrested in Coimbatore on Monday for possessing and selling synthetic drugs and ganja. The arrested suspects were identified as M Gokul (28) from Balaji Nagar North near Cheran Maa Nagar, S Niyasudheen Ahmed (29) alias Chinna from Karumbukadai, Y Mohammed Ajmal (26) from Bilal Nagar at South Ukkadam, and K Yadhavan (21) from Kottur Malaiyandipattinam near Pollachi. Yadhavan, a final-year student at a private college, was reportedly involved in the drug sales targeting his peers.
According to Karumbukadai police, Gokul was working with the design team for the Delhi-Noida highways project and had set up an office at Cheran Maa Nagar. Gokul became involved in the drug trade after befriending a youth based in Coimbatore via Instagram. This youth, who worked in Goa, supplied methamphetamine to Gokul, who subsequently became an addict and began distributing the synthetic drug.
Gokul sold methamphetamine to youths who gathered on synthetic cricket turf during the late hours at Cheran Maa Nagar. One gram of methamphetamine was sold for Rs 4,000. Along with the synthetic drug, he also distributed ganja to college students through his accomplices.
The police have seized significant amounts of synthetic drugs and ganja from the arrested individuals, and investigations are ongoing to trace other possible accomplices involved in the racket.
