The Crime Branch (Unit 12) arrested four individuals on Saturday for running a fraudulent call centre in Borivli (West) that targeted US citizens. The suspects allegedly deceived victims by offering fake computer software repairs. Police took action after receiving a tip-off about the illegal operations taking place on the third floor of Arpan Apartment, a partially completed building located at Amarkant Jha Marg, Vajira Naka, Borivali West.
During the raid, police seized several items, including six laptops, 20 phones, two routers, and six speaker headphones. The arrested individuals—Akshat Surana, Abhishek Gupta, Dipen Dhanwani, and Tilak Joshi—are currently in police custody. Authorities confirmed that, except for Dhanwani, the other three individuals have previous criminal records.
The investigation revealed that the suspects employed a deceptive method to target US citizens. They sent fake pop-up messages to their victims’ computers, claiming to highlight software issues and directing them to a toll-free contact number. When victims called, the perpetrators posed as representatives from Microsoft, offering to fix the supposed problems. In the process, they tricked victims into providing their banking information, which was subsequently stolen.
The police are continuing their investigation into the operations of the fraudulent call centre, aiming to uncover more details and identify additional victims.
