Four men have been arrested for allegedly defrauding a city businessman, Dharmendra Gupta, of over Rs 42 lakh by promising substantial returns on a cryptocurrency investment. The accused were also reportedly involved in cyber frauds totaling Rs 5.5 crore.
According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Aditya, the incident came to light after Gupta, a restaurant proprietor in the Kamla Nagar area, filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime Police Station on March 4. Gupta revealed that on January 19, he received a friend request from Anu Arora. After exchanging WhatsApp numbers, she persuaded him to invest in cryptocurrency trading, which led to Gupta transferring Rs 42.5 lakh across three accounts.
The police registered an FIR under Section 318 of the BNS and Section 66 of the IT Act and arrested the four suspects: Lakhan Singh (32) from Delhi, Anuj Kumar (28) from Noida, and Tarun Kumar (30) and Watan Kumar (33) from Muzaffarnagar.
Police investigations revealed the accused had links to cyber criminals in Mumbai, and Anuj Kumar had been in contact with Anu Arora, who persuaded the complainant to make the investment. The police also confirmed that the recipient accounts have been frozen, and Rs 6 lakh has been seized. Efforts are underway to locate Anu Arora and other suspects involved in the scam.
