TOWN OF BERGEN, Wis. (WSAW) – A former town clerk in Marathon County has pleaded guilty to embezzling nearly $220,000 from both a local government and a nonprofit organization, avoiding a jury trial through a plea agreement.

Gloriann Doyle, who served as clerk for the Town of Bergen, entered guilty pleas to six of eleven charges on Thursday. As part of the deal, five charges were dismissed.

The investigation began in January, when the Bergen town chairman contacted deputies after discovering suspicious financial activity. An audit later confirmed that multiple checks had been written to Doyle, some appearing to include forged signatures.

Records show Doyle began working as clerk in July 2024, and the thefts began just a month later.

In addition to her government position, Doyle also served on the board of the Wisconsin Valley Art Association, a Marathon County-based nonprofit. Authorities believe she embezzled from the nonprofit over a four-year span.

During an interview with investigators, Doyle reportedly admitted to stealing the money to pay off personal bills, noting she was months behind on her mortgage.

In total, officials estimate that Doyle stole nearly $220,000 combined from both the Town of Bergen and the Wisconsin Valley Art Association.

Town chairman Ed Rucinski confirmed that Doyle resigned in mid-January at his request following the allegations.

A sentencing date may be determined during an upcoming status conference scheduled for next week.
