WACO, Texas (KWTX) — Dealan James (D.J.) Adams, 42, a former Waco police sergeant turned contractor, was arrested on a felony theft charge related to unpaid roofing services.

Adams, of Woodway, posted a $10,000 bond and was released from the McLennan County Jail on Tuesday following his arrest Monday. He faces a third-degree felony charge for theft of services valued between $30,000 and $150,000, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Adams was indicted on September 11 in a sealed case and taken into custody after a grand jury referral. The investigation was conducted by the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office and forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office.

Records show Adams operates a contracting company called The Guys Services of Central Texas. According to the indictment, Adams hired Austin Montgomery of The Roof Co. in November 2024 and agreed to pay for roofing labor and materials. However, after the work was completed, Adams allegedly failed to make full payment despite being notified of the outstanding balance.

Adams resigned from the Waco Police Department in May 2020 after nearly 15 years of service and also served as a reserve deputy for the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office until about a year ago.
