VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A former Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputy, Douglas Meyer, has been charged with orchestrating an organized check kiting scheme involving local credit unions.
Meyer, 37, allegedly exploited delays in check clearing by issuing bad checks between multiple credit unions, allowing him to access funds before the checks were fully processed. The scheme came to light in September when a credit union reported the suspicious activity, prompting a full investigation by the sheriff’s office.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said, “My goal is to make sure he’s held accountable and never works in law enforcement again.”
Meyer served with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office from 2020 to 2024, briefly returning that same year before resigning in August. During the fraud, Meyer reportedly appeared at a credit union in uniform to request the release of holds on deposited checks.
Following the investigation, Meyer voluntarily surrendered to authorities and now faces felony charges for his alleged scheme.
