Charlotte, N.C. – A former U.S. Postal Service (USPS) employee, Nakedra Shannon, along with two co-conspirators, has been sentenced for stealing over $24 million worth of checks, including U.S. Treasury checks, while employed at a USPS distribution center in Charlotte.

The Scheme Unveiled

Shannon, 30, worked as a mail processing clerk at the USPS from March 2021 until her termination in July 2023. From April to July 2023, she conspired with Desiray Carter, 30, and Donell Gardner to steal both incoming and outgoing checks. According to the Department of Justice, Shannon admitted to stealing the checks during her job at the distribution center. The stolen checks included more than $12 million worth of checks posted for sale on the Telegram channel “OG Glass House,” as well as more than $8 million in stolen U.S. Treasury checks.

Selling Stolen Checks

The thieves sold the stolen checks to others using the Telegram channel, raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars. Gardner and Carter were also sentenced for their roles in the scheme, with Carter receiving 54 months in prison and Gardner sentenced to 54 months in prison in 2023. Together, the defendants pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit financial institution fraud and theft of government property.

Restitution Ordered

The convicted criminals were ordered to pay $113,333.87 in restitution, jointly and separately. U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, Dena J. King, acknowledged the efforts of the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of the Inspector General, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, IRS-Criminal Investigation, U.S. Department of Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service, and Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department for their investigation and successful prosecution of the case.
