The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) brought charges in December 2023 against three individuals, including a former project manager, for their involvement in a corruption scheme. The charges include corruption of an official, corrupt use of official information, and obtaining by deception.
The defendants named in the case are former project manager Daud Suryantyo, Henry Rogo, the ex-director of Trinity Construction Limited, and Milosi Toala, who had previously been granted name suppression. Toala’s name suppression was recently lifted, allowing him to be publicly identified.
Toala faces multiple charges, including six counts of obtaining by deception and two charges related to the corrupt use or disclosure of official information.
The SFO alleges that the three men conspired to obtain construction contracts from Regional Facilities Auckland and the Counties Manukau District Health Board (now Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau). The charges suggest that the men concealed their personal and business relationships with one another, which they had hidden from the public bodies, and that Suryantyo personally benefited from the scheme, including receiving bribes.
In total, the three individuals are accused of securing around $3.5 million in public funds through these fraudulent activities.
The Serious Fraud Office has expressed gratitude to Regional Facilities Auckland (now part of Tātaki Auckland Unlimited Limited) for bringing the matter to light following an internal investigation, and to both Regional Facilities Auckland and the Counties Manukau District Health Board for their cooperation.
The case is scheduled for a trial callover in December, where further proceedings will take place.
