MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Roy Adams Jr., a former Mobile police officer, has been indicted on a charge of homicide by vehicle following a fatal crash involving a motorcycle. The incident occurred when Adams, 45, of Theodore, ran a red light in midtown Mobile in July, leading to the death of 67-year-old motorcyclist Sumner “Kahuna” Howard, a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Adams surrendered and was booked into the Mobile County Metro Jail, where he was released shortly after on a $10,000 bond.
An investigation by FOX10 News, led by reporter Ariel Mallory, revealed that Adams had been involved in a total of four crashes while on duty last year, including the fatal wreck. New reports also uncovered discrepancies between the Mobile Police Department’s official crash report and the indictment. The crash report stated Adams had his blue lights on but did not use his siren, while the indictment claims he ran the red light “without both his visual emergency lights and audible siren.”
While the Mobile Police Department confirmed Adams was responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash, the department has not disclosed details about the nature of that call. Further investigation by FOX10 News also revealed that Adams had a history of traffic violations, including multiple speeding tickets in Florida.
Adams’ indictment highlights concerns over his driving record, with questions arising about the department’s oversight of his conduct while on duty.
