MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A former sergeant with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), Daniel Holifield, has been indicted on multiple felony charges stemming from alleged theft, forgery, and financial fraud, according to District Attorney Keith Blackwood.

A Mobile County Grand Jury handed down the 12-count indictment, which includes charges of theft and possession of forged instruments.

Holifield, who was hired by MCSO in December 1998, served as the Fleet Department manager at the time of his arrest in April 2023. He was originally arrested on 13 charges, including:

3 counts of first-degree theft of property

10 counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument

Allegations Include Forgery, Car Theft, and Overtime Fraud

Court documents allege Holifield used official MCSO letterhead and forged the signatures of three co-workers to fraudulently purchase 10 vehicles.

In addition, he is accused of stealing three cars, specifically:

A 2005 Pontiac

A 2014 Chevrolet Impala

A 2015 Chevrolet Malibu

Holifield is also accused of abusing the department’s overtime system by logging 2,613 fraudulent hours, totaling $148,900.48 in extra pay for the year 2022.

Authorities say the alleged criminal activity spanned from 2020 to April 2023, just before his arrest.

Arraignment and Reforms

Holifield is expected to be arraigned in Mobile County Circuit Court in the coming weeks. Following the investigation, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office has reportedly made changes to its overtime tracking system to prevent similar abuses in the future.
