MADISON, Ala. — A former Madison City Schools paraprofessional aide has been arrested and charged with torture and willful abuse of a child, according to the Madison Police Department.
Jamie Lynn Schwab turned herself in to authorities on Tuesday and was booked into the Madison County Jail. She has since been released on a $5,000 bond.
The arrest comes after an internal investigation was launched by Madison City Schools when an employee reported possible misconduct involving Schwab. During the school district’s investigation, Schwab resigned from her position. Madison City Schools then referred the case to the Madison Police Department, which led to formal charges.
School District Responds
In an official statement, Superintendent Dr. Edwin Nichols emphasized the district’s commitment to student safety and compliance with all legal requirements:
“Madison City Schools takes the safety and well-being of our students very seriously… During the course of the investigation, the paraprofessional aide resigned her employment. Thereafter, based on the investigation, Madison City Schools reported the alleged misconduct to the Madison Police Department… Because this is an ongoing criminal investigation and to protect the privacy of individuals involved, Madison City Schools cannot provide any additional details.”
The district said it took “appropriate steps,” informed parents as necessary, and removed Schwab from the school environment immediately after concerns were raised.
Ongoing Investigation
The Madison Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident. No further details about the alleged abuse have been released at this time due to the sensitive nature of the case and the involvement of minors.
