A 56-year-old former BJP councillor, Kanta Chhipa from Sanganer, was arrested Monday for allegedly orchestrating a financial fraud racket. She is accused of duping numerous people with false promises of subsidised government schemes and lucrative investment returns.
The Malpura Gate police station revealed that despite the arrest of her alleged accomplice Mala Singh earlier, Kanta continued the scam. The case was initiated on March 3 after Trilok Chhipa, a Krishna City resident, complained that Kanta and her associates collected money by promising cheap rations, scooters, mobile phones, and quick monetary returns.
Victims were lured with offers such as Rs 22,000 returns on deposits of Rs 5,000, ration kits worth Rs 2,200 sold at Rs 1,200, and scooters priced at Rs 1 lakh offered for Rs 50,000. Police noted that Mala Singh, a close aide involved in the racket, had fled before being arrested.
“Kanta promoted the scheme as a BJP-backed initiative to gain public trust,” an official said. After Mala went underground, Kanta allegedly took over, going door-to-door collecting funds but failed to deliver promised goods or refunds.
A special investigation team from East District police seized vital evidence including video recordings and transaction records. Kanta Chhipa has been sent to judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing to identify further accused involved in the scam.
