Fake IDs and Forged Documents Used to Cheat Buyers

by Ananya Mehta

Punjab Police have arrested five members of an inter-district gang involved in duping property buyers using forged documents and fake identities. The operation, led by DSP Karan Sandhu and SHO Balwinder Singh, recovered Rs32.5 lakh in cash and five vehicles.

The case surfaced after Amarjit Singh, a resident of Gharuan village, filed a complaint alleging that two men—Jagdish Kumar and Avtar Singh—posed as landowners and fraudulently sold him property in Luhar Majra Kalan village, Fatehgarh Sahib. They used forged power of attorney documents to cheat the complainant.

Police investigation revealed the forged documents and arrested the accused. Following their interrogation, police arrested three others: Bhupesh Mehta alias Mani, Jagtar Singh alias Satnam Singh, and Gurbhej Singh alias Gurbaz. Vehicles including a Honda Amaze, Brezza, Skoda, and a red car registered in Punjab were seized.

The gang operated from a rented house in Morinda for four years, targeting buyers amid rising land prices. They used fake identities—Avtar Singh as Bahadur Singh and Jagdish Kumar as Jeet Singh—to mislead victims.

A key accused, Kulwinder Singh alias Kali, remains absconding with multiple charges, including murder, forgery, cheating, and drug offenses. Police continue raids to apprehend him.
