WEST END, NC — A Fayetteville man has been arrested in connection with the death of his 2-year-old son, River Carter, in December 2023.

On December 2, Moore County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with emergency medical responders, arrived at the family’s residence in the 100 block of Shady Wood Court in West End after a distress call about an unresponsive child. River Carter was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Moore County Sheriff’s Department, investigators determined that the child had been isolated in a room for over twelve hours and had been exposed to elevated temperatures from a space heater before his death was reported.

After reviewing medical examiner findings, authorities arrested Aaron Lynwood Carter, 27, on January 7, 2025. Carter has been charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury related to his son’s death.

Carter is currently being held at the Moore County Detention Center under a $500,000 secured bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for January 9 in Moore County District Court.
