Fakhrul Anwar, a former Awami League leader, was arrested at his son’s wedding ceremony in Chattogram last night, following a disruption outside the venue.

Fakhrul, the younger brother of late Fatikchhari MP Rafiqul Anwar, was detained around 11 p.m. at the Navy Convention Hall, located in the Tiger Pass area of Chattogram. The wedding was for his son, who married the granddaughter of former Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor M. Manjur Alam.

Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (North), Muhammad Faisal Ahmed, confirmed the arrest, explaining that law enforcement had been keeping Fakhrul under surveillance after receiving information about his attendance at the event.

Eyewitnesses reported a chaotic scene outside the wedding venue, where more than a hundred youths gathered, chanting slogans and blocking Fakhrul’s path. They reportedly shouted, “My brother is in the grave, why is the murderer outside?” The police arrived shortly after to defuse the situation and arrested Fakhrul Anwar.

There were rumors circulating on social media about the attendance of Bangladesh Tariqat Federation Chairman Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari and former MP Khadijatul Anwar Soni. However, eyewitnesses denied their presence, and Deputy Commissioner Faisal confirmed that Soni was not at the event.

The wedding, which saw a significant turnout of Awami League leaders and activists, quickly turned chaotic, leading many attendees, including former mayor Manjur Alam, to leave the venue.

Fakhrul Anwar is currently under investigation in connection with the incident.
