Yobe State, Nigeria – The Yobe State Police Command has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against cybercrime and fraud with the arrest of Agugu Joshua, a 29-year-old man impersonating a Nigerian Navy personnel. Joshua was apprehended with a counterfeit Nigerian Navy ID card, which he used to deceive victims, particularly POS vendors and store owners.
According to DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua’s method of operation involved using the Kuda Bank app to create fake receipts, making it appear as though transactions were legitimate. Initially, he would make a small legitimate transaction to build trust with his victims. Then, he would alter the receipt and delay the transaction alert, allowing him to trick victims into handing over goods or money.
Joshua’s arrest came after a covert operation by operatives from the State Intelligence Department (SID) on December 18, 2024, at 2:00 PM. Commissioner of Police Garba Ahmed has issued a public warning, advising people to remain cautious and verify identities and transactions to avoid falling victim to similar scams.
This arrest underscores the increasing threat of impersonation scams, where criminals pose as government officials or military personnel to commit fraudulent activities. The public is urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
