Police in Cachar district of southern Assam have arrested Pulak Malakar, a 43-year-old man from Sribhumi, for impersonating a doctor and performing more than 50 caesarean sections over the past decade.
Malakar had been practising as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at a private hospital in Silchar, the district headquarters, where he had built a reputation despite lacking legitimate medical qualifications.
The arrest follows investigations revealing the fraudulent medical practices and the risks posed to patients under his care.
