In another alarming case of the growing digital arrest scam, a Panchkula resident was allegedly cheated of Rs5.9 lakh by a fraudster posing as a Hyderabad police officer.
According to ACP (Crime) Arvind Kamboj, the victim, Sajjan Kumar, lodged a complaint on October 9, 2024. He reported that on October 3, he received a call from a man who introduced himself as a police officer from Hyderabad.
The imposter accused Sajjan Kumar of being involved in a fabricated criminal case and threatened him with “digital arrest” unless he transferred money immediately. Fearing legal trouble, the victim complied, transferring Rs5.9 lakh to the fraudster’s account.
Police have launched an investigation to trace the suspect and have urged the public to remain cautious of such scams. Officials stressed that no genuine police officer conducts arrests or investigations over phone or video calls.
